Roles of Synoptic to Quasi-Biweekly Disturbances in Generating the Summer 2003 Heavy Rainfall in East China

  During the Meiyu season of summer 2003,the Yangtze River Basin (YRB) and Huai River Basin (HRB) in East China encountered anomalously heavy rainfall,and the HRB suffered a severe flood because of five continuous extreme rainfall events.A spectral analysis of high-resolution daily rainfall data reveals that the YRB rainfall resulted from superposition of quasi-biweekly (10-20-day) and synoptic-scale (3-8-day) disturbances,whereas the HRB rainfall was dominated by synoptic-scale disturbances (Fig.1).
