Fatigue strength of Al7075 notched plates based on the local SED averaged over a control volume
In the presence of sharp V-notches the stress distributions are singular and the intensity of the stress fields can be given in terms of the notch stress intensity factors (NSIFs).These stress field parameters have been largely used in the literature for fatigue strength assessments of welded joints and sharply notched components.Very refined meshes are necessary to determine directly the NSIFs or the stress concentration factors from the local stress distributions.Refined meshes are not necessary when the aim of the finite element analysis is to determine the mean value of the local strain energy density over a control volume surrounding the points of stress singularity. The strain energy density in fact can be derived directly from nodal displacements,so that even coarse meshes are able to give values sufficiently accurate for the averaged SED.The link between local strain energy density and notch stress intensity factors or theoretical stress concentration factors is discussed with reference to some typical welded joints and to plates weakened by sharp V-notches.The SED-based procedure is found to be useful to determine theoretical stress concentration factors for holes and blunt V-and U-shaped notches. An application of the strain energy density to the fatigue assessment of Al7075 notched plates is presented in the last part of this work. The considered data are taken from the recent literature and refer to notched specimens subjected to different shot peening treatment aimed to increase the notch fatigue strength with respect to the untreated material.
