Organoclay Induced Co-Continuous Morphology in an Asymmetric Composition of Polypropylene/Polyamide 6 Blend by a Special Compounding Sequence
Three compounding sequences (direct mixing, mixing PP with premixed PA6/organoclay,intermediate feeding of PP in premelted PA6/organoclay) were utilized to evaluate the possibility of organoclay in promoting co-continuous morphology for PP/PA6 (70/30 w/w) blend. The third method turns out to be effective. For all compounding sequences, organoclay is distributed selectively in PA6 phase and at the interface. And premixing PA6 with organoclay yields a better final dispersion state of organoclay than direct mixing. The role of organoclay in enhancing melt elasticity of PA6 phase (thus reducing its ability to deform and breakup) and retarding phase inversion during blending is believed to be responsible for co-continuous morphology formation. At the same organoclay loading, the blend with co-continuous morphology displays higher dynamic storage modulus than those with matrix-dispersed morphology.
