Biochar Application to Heavy Metal Contaminated Soil
Biochar is a low-density charred material produced by burningbiomass under conditions of low temperatures and minimaloxygen. It has been described as a possible means to improvesoil fertility as well as other ecosystem services and sequestercarbon (C) to mitigate climate change. In recent years, several studies also show that biochar could adsorb both organicand inorganic contaminants to their surfaces, reducing pollutant mobility when amending contaminatedsoils.Especially,it is receiving increasing attention as a promising functional material for heavy metal stabilization in environmental application. Moreover, the stabilization effect of contaminants by biochar is demonstrated to be long lasting.By now,the effects of biochar on the mobility and bioavailabilityof heavy metals have been widely studied and a lot of significant discoveries have been received. Therefore, the paper reviews latest advance and research progressin phytostabilization of heavy metal-contaminated land by biochar.
