Variation of Total Bacterial Cell Counts and Bacterial Communities in Different Water Treatment Processes From a Wastewater Treatment Plant

Contaminated water can be the source of many waterborne pathogens, which pose latent threat to human health and environmental safety.Bacterial abundance in raw wastewater influent in a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) is rarely quantified and its community structure is often neglected as well.In treated effluents, only the quantification of faecal indicators like Escherichia coli, total coliforms, streptococci, etc.is generally considered, and then only to evaluate disinfection performance. This may due to the lack of easy and rapid methods for quantification of total bacterial cell concentrations and analyze bacterial community structures.
