Distribution Characteristics and Risk Assessment of Mercury Pollution in the River Water and Sediment of the Songhua River Upstream Gold Mining Area

We collected the river water and sediment samples near the Jiapigou goldfield located in the upper reaches of the Songhua River and studied the distribution characteristic of mercury pollution caused by gold mining and transformation rules of mercury and methylmercury. The results show that in the river water, total mercury is in a negative correlation with the distant to the mining area. However,in the sediment, the correlation is somehow positive as higher total mercury content was found in the lower reaches of the river while upper stream samples show lower total mercury content. No such rule is found in terms of methylmercury in both river water and sediment.
