Economic Loss Estimation of Air Pollution Caused in the Energy Lifecycle

Energy consumption and related activities have contributed much to air pollution. It is gradually acknowledged that the air pollution produced in the energy lifecycle leads to enormous economic loss because of such effects as public health damage, crop yield reduction, and corrosion of materials. In this paper, the economic loss caused in the energy lifecycle including energy production, transportation and consumption is estimated, when focusing on pollutants of SO2 and PM10.From aspects of health damage, crop yield reduction, and corrosion of materials, the respective economic losses are calculated on the basis of given concentration-response relationships and dose-response functions.Taking Beijing,China as a case, the established estimation methods are applied and verified. It is shown that the total economic loss of air pollution caused in the energy lifecycle generally increases with time although with certain fluctuations during the study period and the highest value reached in 2006.
