Can LEDs Make Revolution in Color Quality?

Revolution in color quality occurred when triphosphor fluorescent lamps were introduced in early 1980s.Can it happen again with Solid State Lighting (SSL)? SSL is advancing rapidly.LEDs have great freedom in spectral design and have potential of making such a revolution. However, such advantages have not been much utilized so far.Currently broadband phosphor LEDs with CRI Ra values around 80 are dominant. Most of these products lack in enough red components.Their color quality is,at most,no better than traditional incandescent or fluorescent lamps, though they are accepted to meet the urgent needs for energy saving. The LEDs last long.It would be a great pity if new technology spreads with poorer color quality than traditional sources. As the LED technology is advancing with costs lowered,it is the time to raise the bar for color quality and also to consider color quality beyond the concept of CRI.
