Impact of drivers Visual Comfort on the assessment of Road Lighting Quality

In the past decades, along with the fast improvements and upgrade of light source technology, the lighting application knowledge is iteratively developing with the light source technology and related luminaire solutions. The renovation of lighting installations bring significant benefits to the society and people by using less energy while providing better lighting conditions. For road lighting applications, light source is updated from monochromatic yellow light (i.e.Low Pressure Sodium lamps) to high quality white light (e.g.LEDs,Ceramic Metal Halide lamps). The lighting design criteria are more and more recommended/standardized not only serving for driving safety, but also to enhance visual comfort and wellbeing of road users. Therefore, the appropriate assessment of lighting quality of Road Lighting installations should be based on accredited research results to further improve the original evaluation criteda to enhance both safety and visual comfort on the road while taking into account energy efficiency considerations. In this article, three sets of studies are presented which are about disability glare, discomfort glare, flicker perception and restriction. All the three topics are related to road lighting application and with the shared goal to better understand the impact of light/lighting quality on drivers visual comfort, consequently on driving safety.
