Visual Perception and Solid Sate Lighting

Light source development was always driven by the requirement to deliver better visual environment. This meant in early development to provide better visual performance,in recent years-with the achievement of light sources with 60 to 100 Im/W efficacy-the desire for more comfortable lighting increased, and lamp manufacturers could pay attention on visual comfort as well.Visual comfort meansamong other questions-light of spectral power distribution that enables not only good visibility of fine details, but pleasant visual environment, light that does not stresses vision, good visual clarity and high colour rendition. All these depend on the spectral power distribution of the light.Light sources based on gas discharge technology could only partially fulfil the above requirements,as the spectral power distribution that could be produced with such lamp technology depended partly on the availability of suitable atomic structures for the gas discharge, and partly on possible florescent components. With the advent of the light emitting diode technology the possibilities of producing desired spectral power distributions increased considerably, and the lamp industry is now faced with the problem, what spectrum should be supplied for the different human activities.Unfortunately vision research was not really prepared to answer these questions, still a number of questions are open, and active research is going on in many laboratories around the world to provide answer placed by modem light source development. In the present paper we will try to highlight some of the recent results achieved that might help lamp developers to find best solutions for lighting different human activities, will mention some questions that still need an answer.Doing this we will concentrate on visual aspects; light has also some very profound influence on human biological functioning, with these questions-however-an other paper will deal at this conference2 The following questions will be discussed in the present paper:· Better description of the colour of the light produced by SSL products · Brightness perception of SSL white lights · Colour fidelity of coloured objects under SSL white lights · Colour preference,or flattery lighting · Mesopic vision and SSL lighting
