Roadmap for studying Human Perception of LED Illumination and Modelling Appearance of Lighting

With the advance of the SSL-based products, users are able to control the colour, intensity, duration and colour sequence, etc.Intemational SSL Association (ISA) has recommended new research areas on human factors on LED illumination as its Strategy Research Agenda. This paper will first introduce the four areas identified:visual performance and comfort, atmosphere modelling,non-visual photobiology effect and appearance model of lighting.A brief account of each area will be covered in terms of rationale and research topics.Additional efforts will be focused on the last are, appearance model of lighting. Its goals are to provide guidelines toward developing model(s):1) to predict the appearance of lighting including brightness, colourfulness and hue,and each will have two viewing modes (unrelated and related stimulus,or seen in isolation or in a environment),and 2) to provide guidelines to accumulate experimental data to develop a model. The initial task will include the definition of various objects in a viewing field such as stimulus, proximal field, background, surround according to aperture model and complex field. The approach should be similar to the visual field defined in CIECAM02,CIE recommended colour appearance model In addition, the definition of the predicted attributes will be introduced including spatial brightness, spatial colourfulness, spatial hues, and spatial uniformity for viewing a complex environment, and brightness, colourfulness and hue for viewing isolated lights. The guidelines for conducting experiment will be introduced including various scaling techniques such as magnitude estimation method for scaling unrelated colours. For spatial brightness, colourfulness, hue and uniformity, the visual field is large but not necessarily full field. The draft CIE TC1.80 report provides guidance for three test procedures (matching, discrimination, and category rating).Examples based upon studies by Fotios et al will be introduced.Their methods are based on the equal luminance (or illuminance) on interval scales, which is related to visual tasks, and not in ratio scale. However, ratio scale includes all features in interval scale and its origin should represent zero response of a particular perceived attribute. Finally, guidelines for developing of colour vision on lighting will be proposed.
