The Effectiveness of Web Citation as an Indicator to Evaluate the Academic Influence of University
The aim of this paper is to test the effectiveness of web citation as an indicator to evaluate the academic influence of university.The web citation data was extracted from the Chinese Science Citation Database.The cited frequency of the hostname of Chinese mainland university in the web citation is taken as the evaluation indicator of academic influence of university.The method is to test the Spearman rank correlation coefficient among five university ranking lists:the university ranking list based on web citation,the Wu Shulian 2010 Top 100 Chinese universities,the Wu Shulian 2010 Top 100 Chinese universities in science,the Cybermetrics Lab 2010 Chinese university ranking list,and the Research Center for China Science Evaluation 2009-2010 Chinese key university ranking list.The test results suggest that web citation can be taken as a referential indicator to evaluate the academic influence of university.
