Health Services Research from Electronic Healthcare Record data
Electronic Healthcare Records may provide an important data source for scientific studies, but the extraction and use of the data are not always as easy and safe as could be desired. This paper suggests, through a worked example from the domain of health services research, some approaches to improving the data quality and reducing the risk of a biased data set. The most important conclusion is, however, that both the use of extracted EHR data for research purposes and the reading of scientific papers based on such data should be done with care.
