TEMPOLENSES - NEW TOOL IN SONIC REPRESENTATION OF MEDICAL DATA. APPLICATION FOR ECG AND RHYTHM ANALYSIS

Sonification - the non-speech audio to convey information - can be used, along with visualization, as a complementary tool for medical data representation. Three major levels of sonic representation can be distinguished: - A (acoustic) level, with a direct correspondence between data and sound parameters, covering a continuum spectrum, - S (sonic) level, with a direct correspondence, but covering a discrete sonic level (pitch), - M (musical) level, with conventional multiaxial correspon-dence, adding rhythm and harmony. The paper aimed to develop, by analogy with visualization, a new tool for sonification - tempolens - which dilates the signal and allows the perception of details in the case of fast changes. Several types of tempolenses have been applied sonification performed for levels A and S upon two classes of signals - ECG signals (both normal and pathologic) and cardiac rhythm analysis.
