EMR for Rheumatology
Introduction: Rheumatology is a medical specialty dealing with disease of the joints. Recent advances have made the commoner problems treatable and even curable with the caveat that care has to be long term, even life long. Since the medicines used are possibly harmful, tight control of medication is required accompanied by close monitoring of disease activity – a term called “Treat to Target This article discusses how a specialized software for rheumatology has automated care, making it easier and simpler, both for the clinician as well as the patient. Objectives: To analyse patient turnover time and outcomes before and after the use of Rheum Aid? a specialized EMR software for Rheumatology Methods: The software was installed in two clinics run by the same Rheumatologist, at his private clinic, as well as in the hospital where there was a bigger team, consisting of other consultants, residents, nurses, therapists and secretaries. Patient turnover was analysed by calculating the a) average appointments per day, b) total number of patients seen, and c) total time spent in the clinic. Results: Daily average of patients seen at the private clinic doubled from six(6) to twelve (12) at the private clinic and rose from 45 to 65 at the hospital clinic, even while the total time spent at the clinic fell from eight (8) to five and a half (5.5) hours. Care outcomes and patient satisfaction, was the same or better since they had to spend less time at the clinic. More time for academic activities, as well as availability of clinical data lead to a higher number of research publications. Conclusion: Software can help automate clinical care especially if it is dependent on calculations. Similar efforts are eminently possible for all specialties especially if dealing in chronic diseases.
