Study on the cryogenic microcracking in unidirectional CFRP
The carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP) used for cryogenic fuel tanks of reusable launch vehicles usually were submitted to cryogenic cycling and cryogenic exposure and there would be microcracks appeared in composite materials. In this paper, the cryogenic microcracking in unidirectional CFRP was studied. The cryogenic exposure tests were operated by immersing the unidirectional CFRP samples in the LN2 for up to 40 days, and the cryogenic cycle tests were performed between positions inside the LN2 dewar and in ambient air for up to 400 cycles.By SEM,the microcracks of the unidirectional CFRP samples were observed in 90° and 0° directions after cryogenic cycles and cryogenic exposure tests, then the microcracks density were caltulated. From the investigation,it was found that the microcrack density increased as the number of cryogenic cycles and cryogenic exposure increased in 90° direction, but almost there were no microcracks in 0° direction after testing.
