Chinas FDI in Australia:Opportunities and Challenges for Chinese SMEs
China has become Australias key trading partner surpassing over $120 billion in annual two-way trade.By contrast,Chinese FDI in Australia amounted to only $ 0.93 billion in 2011,a six-year low,and the Chinese share of the accumulated stock of FDI was just 2.4 per cent. One of the proximate reasons for investment lagging trade so badly is the hurdle that Chinese investors have to face when trying to pass the Australian government FDI scrutiny. This paper discusses investment opportunities in Australia from the perspective of Chines SMEs,and offers observations for consideration with special emphasis on mode of entry, corporate governance, integration into local communities and low-carbon FDI.
