The Best of Both Worlds:Working Towards a Western-Eastern Management Model
Are Western and Eastern management philosophies mutually exclusive and best applied in isolation-or could there be an optimal mixture of both that produces the best results in an international context? This paper explores how West meets East in the management approaches of German subsidiaries in China. In an exploratory pilot study, three German Mittelstand companies were evaluated on their use of German and Chinese management practices and corporate strategic orientation, drawing inspiration from Perlmutters ‘Ethnocentric-Polycentric-Geocentric (EPG) model.Through qualitative inquiry, rich insights were obtained from semi-structured,in-depth interviews with each of the Chinese subsidiaries’ functional heads, managing directors and headquarter representatives.
