Action Sports as Economic Development:The Case of Skateparks in China

Action sports, including skateboarding, have grown in worldwide popularity in recent years. In some cities, action sports facilities, especially skateparks, have become an intentional part of the overall economic development strategy. While skateparks rarely provide direct fiscal benefits, the parks provide community benefits and can be important components of a basket of public goods that might help the locale become more attractive to individuals. This paper describes the action sports industry, and the cases of three skateparks in China.Public officials are cautioned against overbuilding skateparks where consumer demand is absent, and private firms are given examples of profit opportunities with the Chinese action sports market.
