A study on Factors Affecting MAG weld Fatigue Failure of Advanced High Strength Steel

In the automotive industry, there has been a continuing trend toward the weight reduction of vehicles in response to the need for cost savings, fuel efficiency, and reduction in CO2 emissions.According to this trend, there have been many trials to apply AHSS to chassis components that are structural assemblies supporting engine, suspension, and steering components etc. However, the most considerable problem making AHSS chassis components is weld zone durability. The reason is the strength of weld zone is not increased as much as the strength of base metal is.In this paper,to improve MAG weld zone strength of AHSS,the effect of torch angle, push angle, weld voltage, weld speed and gas types is precisely analyzed.Fist of all,by tensile tests of weld specimens, torch angle, push angle and weld speed are known as main factors deciding tensile strength.Because the relation between tensile strength and fatigue strength is proportional,it is assumed that torch angle, push angle, weld speed are the main factors to control fatigue life.Next, maintaining the same heat input level, the difference of fatigue life is investigated according to changing torch and push angle respectively. The more torch and push angle are large, the more the fatigue life is long.
