Rapid and Accurate Evaluation of Oxide Inclusion Particles in Steel using Laser Ablation ICP Mass Spectrometry

Since the removal of inclusion particles in steelmaking process has a relation close to the production of clean steel, various instrumental methods such as EPMA-Computer Mapping Analysis,Spark Electric Discharge-Optical Emission Spectrometry,Ultrasonic Testing were proposed for rapid evaluation of inclusion particles. In this study, the application of Laser Ablation-Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) were examined and discussed from the viewpoint of the rapid analysis of oxide inclusion particles in steel. The lower limit of oxide inclusion size in LA-ICP-MS method was estimated based on the difference of ion intensity peaks between the inclusion particle and matrix steel. The maximum critical number of inclusion particles in steel was also estimated based on the overlapping of ion intensity peaks of adjacent plural inclusion particles.Though some limits had to be considered regarding to the content of soluble elements, the number and dispersion of analyzed inclusions in metal matrix,it was found that the LA-ICP-MS technique can be successfully applied for the rapid analysis of oxide inclusion particles in steel.
