STG Design Concepts for Wide,Thin Gauge/Foil Class Applications

The ZR22 class of large/wide 20-High Cluster (Sendzimir) Mills (with expanding mandrels) is the standard in the cold reduction of stainless steels. The traditional limits of thin gauge rolling place the ZR22 minimum rolled thickness at 0.200mm,primarily due to their larger diameter work rolls and lack of mechanical stability associated with the expanding mandrels. The mechanical stability of solid-block mandrels helps to reduce the minimum thickness, but this comes with the cost of a higher initial investment and lower production throughput.Unfortunately, this approach does not allow the ZR22 class mills to reliably roll down to foil class materials (0.100mm and below).Tenova I2S has combined its many years of experience in manufacturing smaller, narrower foil class mills with a series of technical innovations, carefully integrated to form a new approach to the design, manufacturing, installation and control of 20-High Cluster Mills, specifically tailored for rolling precision, thin gauge/foil class materials. This new form of wide mill is termed STG (Super Thin Gauge). This paper discusses the innovations and developments of the STG concepts and illustrates the unprecedented performance capabilities achieved by the ZR22-52 STG mill, when consistently rolling stainless steels down to 0.070mm thicknesses.
