Thermodynamic Interaction between Chromium and Sulfur in Fe-Cr Melts

The effect of Cr on S in Fe-Cr melt was determined by measuring the equilibrium S distribution ratio between Fe-Cr-Csat.-S melts containing Cr up to 30 mass% and a CaO-Al2O3 slag of which the sulfide capacity was separately determined using a Fe-S-Csat melt in the temperature range of 1823-1923K.The experiments were carried out under a CO atmosphere. Therefore, the oxygen potential was controlled by the C-CO equilibrium.Chromium in the Fe-Cr-Csat-S melt increases the carbon solubility significantly. Therefore, the effect of carbon solubility variation with Cr content on S should be also considered.Using Wagner’s formalism, the effect of a specific concentration of Cr on the activity coefficient of S in liquid iron,Cr S e was determined as follows.
