Scrap-melting Operation by Shaft Furnace using all Conventional-size BF Coke and Steel Scrap

In the scrap-melting operation of shaft furnaces,an operation technology has been established that allows us to melt scrap, instead of typically utilizing foundry coke by using conventional BF coke having an averaged size of 50 mm or less to the full amount of coke.According to this technology,as ferrous raw materials, instead of using return scrap of low melting point that contains carbon at 3–4%,steel scrap containing almost no carbon are used to the full amount—70% or more of which consists of shredder scrap. This technology was explored with not only one-stage tuyere operations using sole lower tuyeres but also two-stage tuyere operations that take advantage of upper tuyeres as well.Stabilized two-stage tuyere operation technology was established by appropriately arranging parameters, such as the number of pipes, the diameter, and the protruding length of the upper tuyeres; while operation technology with high efficiency was established, which enabled us to achieve high productivity and low coke ratio.
