Copper Distribution between γ-Fe and Liquid Sulfide
In order to develop a new technology to utilize ferrous scrap containing transition metals such as Cu,a new trial has been examined in which a low-melting oxysulfide solvent is used to refine Cu in the ferrous scrap.The oxysulfide solvent dissolves the scrap,therefore Cu in the scrap is remained in the solvent due to its strong affinity to S,while Fe from the scrap is precipitated in a form of solid phase by reduction of the solvent.In order to find its feasibility in the Cu removal,Cu distribution between solid Fe and liquid oxysulfide solvent composed of Fe-S-O(-Cu-Na-etc.) is prerequisite.Therefore,as a first trial of the proposed idea,phase equilibria in the Fe-Cu-S ternary system at Fe-rich corner,which is expected to maximize Cu distribution ratio,has been experimentally investigated to establish fundamental knowledge on the Cu removal from ferrous scrap by liquid sulfide flux composed of Fe-Cu-S.Also,addition of Na2S in the Fe-Cu-S liquid sulfide was also examined.It was found that copper distribution ratio,LCu = (mass% Cu)flux/mass% Cuγ-Fe at 1200℃ is in the range of 6.5~7 which is comparable with that reported by the previous investigations using a similar type of flux and liquid C-saturated iron.It is distinguished from the previous investigations that the obtained solid Fe contains much lower sulfur (a few hundred ppm at 1200℃) which would decrease excessive post-desulfurization process.Addition of the Na2S increased the LCu to~26,which is consistent with the previous investigations.Finally,investigation on the copper distribution was extended to Fe-Cu-S-O oxysulfide flux.When oxygen content in the flux was higher than sulfur content (nO/(nO + nS) > 0.4),LCu decreased by the increase of oxygen contents in oxysulfide.
