Internal Friction Study of Aging in a 340MPa Bake Hardenable Steel

The evolution of the amplitude of the Snoek peak, the γ-peak and the Snoek-K(o)ster peaks during the static stra in aging of a 340MPa bake-hardenable (BH) steel was studied by the impulse internal friction (IF) technique.Samples of the BH steel were uni-axially deformed to a strain ranging from 0% to 10%,prior to aging. It was found that an increasi ng deformation resulted in an increase of the SK peak amplitude. The Snoek peak also appeared to be enhanced by the d eformation. The samples were annealed at 170°C for 1 hour to precipitate the C as carbide and thereby remove it from t he matrix. This caused the Snoek peak amplitude to be reduced to zero, leaving only the γ-peak and the Snoek-K?ster pe ak in the IF spectrum. The SK peak was not affected by the aging treatment, and the IF spectra of the original and the aged samples overlapped perfectly for temperatures above 200°C.The results allow for an exact description of the distribu tion of interstitial C between octahedral interstitial lattice sites and dislocations sites, which is a key parameter to determin e the bake-hardening potential of low C steel and ultra low C steel.
