Point Defect Analysis and Yielding Behavior of Quenched and Aged Fe-N-C

The yielding behavior of a quenched and aged Fe-114ppmN-30ppmC steel was studied.Hot rolled samples were cold rolled to a thickness of 1.2mm,recrystallization-annealed at 1093K for 30sec and water quenched. The samples were subsequently aged at 473K for different times.Vacancy loops were observed by Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) after water quenching (WQ).The temperature-dependent Internal Friction (IF) technique was used to determine the amount of interstitial N and C in octahedral interstitial sites. No clear yield point elongation was observed after water quenching.Aging caused the appearance of a yield point elongation and a reduction of the N and C in the octahedral interstitial sites. The role of N and C and vacancy loops on the yield behavior is discussed on the basis of the results obtained by uniaxial tensile tests, the IF technique and TEM.
