A Model for the Martensite Transformation Kinetics in Low Alloy Heat Treatable Steel

A new empirical model for martensite transformation kinetics in low alloy heat treatable steels is proposed based on an exponential function. The proposed model was derived to avoid the limitations of the Koistinen and Marburger model by considering the influence of alloying elements. The value of the exponent in the proposed model improves the accuracy of the transformation rate at the early stage of transformation. This leads to a better prediction of the martensite volume fraction compared to previous models. The accuracy of the volume fractions predicted by the proposed model was verified for a variety of experimental data,in particular published values of M90 temperatures and the volume fraction of retained austenite for different carbon levels. The proposed model was used for quenching distortion simulations, and resulted in more accurate predictions.
