Mechanical Behavior of Multi-phase 12% Mn TWIP Steel

The tensile behavior of a multi-phase γ+α TWIP steel was investigated. The mechanical behavior was essentially determined by the ferrite volume fraction and the stacking fault energy of the retained austenite. These two factors could be controlled by the choice of the annealing temperature and the selection of a specific alloy composition. The present st udy focused on a 12Mn-0.3C-xAl TWIP steel concept,in which the Al additions were used to control these two essential factors,as Al is a potent ferrite stabilizer and Al increases the stacking fault energy of the retained austenite. The present work focused on the in-depth micro-characterization which was carried out to evaluate the nature of the strain hardening in this type of multi-phase γ+α TWIP steel.
