Reduction Behavior of Semi-charcoal Composite Iron Oxide Pellets

  Japanese cypress was carbonized halfway at maximum carbonization temperatures TC,max = 823,1073 and 1273 K to obtain semi-charcoal with some residual volatile matter (V.M.); the gasification rate of the semi-charcoal obtained was higher than that of coke and coal char.The semi-charcoal at TC,max= 823 K retained much V.M.,especially almost all H2.The semi-charcoal composite iron oxide pellets including residual V.M.have been made and reduced at reduction temperatures TR = 1073,1173 and 1273 K in N2 gas atmosphere.Fractional reduction F (%) after 60 min of the semi-charcoal composite pellets with the particle size range of 63-75 μm at TC,max = 823 K were 19 % and 40 % at TR = 1073 and 1173 K,respectively,and were higher than any other pellets at TC,max=1073 and 1273 K.When TC,max was lower,namely the pellet had more residual V.M.,the reduction of iron oxide was more accelerated at TR =1073 and 1173 K.On the other hand,fractional reduction F of semi-charcoal composite pellet at TC,max = 1073 K using semi-charcoal particle with the size range of 23-35 μm was 38 % for 60 min at TR = 1173 and 95 % for 40 min at TR =1273 K,respectively,and was higher than any other pellets using semi-charcoal particles with the size ranges of 63-75 and 105 - 150 μm.As the size of semi-charcoal particle decreased,the reduction of iron oxide was much enhanced at TR = 1173 and 1273 K.The semi-charcoal composite pellets using the semi-charcoal obtained at TC,max = 823,1073 and 1273 K were heated from room temperature to TR,max = 1273 K at a heating rate of 10 K/min in the N2 gas or CO-CO2-N2 gas mixture atmosphere.It was found that the residual V.M.in the semi-charcoal was released nearly from TC,max and the reduction of iron oxide was enhanced by such V.M.in either case of N2 or CO-CO2-N2 atmosphere.
