Challenging Projects for Low-Carbon Ironmaking:Innovative Blast Furnace,Cokemaking and Sintering Processes
Recent great earthquake in east Japan has brought a change of the public vision to the scope for feature energies. It may also make countermeasures to the mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions more difficult because of the rising issues concerning the accident of nuclear power station. Therefore, development of the ironmaking technologies consuming a lower amount of carbon has become more important challenge for Japanese steel industry than ever. The share of the steel industry in the total CO2 in Japan has been about 14% and the ironmaking process is responsible nearly 70% of this emission. Its reduction does not seem very easy because the energy efficiency has become near maximum by applying various energy-saving measures,e.g.,high PCI technology and CDQ and TRT systems.Further reduction of the carbon dioxide emission will be achieved only through essential process innovations including pretreatment processes of iron ores and reducing agents like the new coke oven battery developed by the SCOPE21 project. At present, the relating national projects in Japan include COURSE50 and “Blast Furnace Based Innovative Ironmaking technologies. The former aims to develop a new process combined of the injection of the steam-reformed COG to the blast furnace and application of the CCS to the outlet gas of blast furnace and the latter aims to verify the advantage of the “ferro-coke having high-reactivity and strength as an innovative agglomerate to the blast furnace.Studies on the property control of the iron burdens are also important subjects considering future changes of the iron ore resources as well as the reductions of energy consumption and CO2 emissions of the iron ore agglomeration process.Hence, the present report will devote more parts to review the recent results of the collaboration projects among steel industry and universities on the iron ore agglomeration.
