Energy Efficient Technologies in Iron Making to Combat and Mitigate Climate Change at Tata Steel,Jamshedpur
Climate change is probably the biggest challenge ever to confront the steel industry,& impact of emission on environment is of increasing concern to all its stakeholders. In response to this challenge,Tata Steel Limited (TSL) is committed to reduce CO2 footprint & minimize environmental impact of its operations. In this effort,TSL is implementing measures to lower its rate of carbon emissions adopting energy efficient technologies.Further,to meet this objective & improve its current processes,TSL has invested in breakthrough technologies & innovative projects.Tatasteel is increasing its crude steel making capacity at the Jamshedpur works from 6.8mtpa to 9.7mtpa via a 2.9mtpa Brownfield expansion project by early 2012 – almost doubling of output in a four year period.Efficiency savings are being gained by replacing multiple small blast furnaces with a less number of high capacity furnaces. The technological innovations made in Iron Making area towards abating environment pollution such as Coke Dry Quenching (CDQ) in Coke Ovens,Top pressure recovery turbine (TRT) in Blast Furnaces and Utilization of Solid waste in Sinter Plant to combat and mitigate climate change at TSL is discussed in this paper.TSL believes,as always, that better environment management leads to superior and long lasting corporate performance.
