Thermodynamic behavior of Si in Mn-Si melts
Thermodynamics of Si at low concentration in Mn-Si melt was studied by measuring the equilibrium Si content in the melt in equilibrium with MnO saturated MnO-SiO2 slag. The equilibrium Si contents were determined as 1.32 and 1.78 mass% at 1673 and 1773K,respectively.The experimental results were analyzed using the unified interaction parameter formalism and the available data for the partial enthalpy of solution of silicon in Mn-Si melt. The activity coefficient of Si at infinite dilution,Si γ°Si and the self-interaction parameters of Si in Mn-Si melt were determined as a function of temperature.Using the thermodynamic parameters determined in the present study, the Si content in Mn-Si melt in equilibrium with SiO2 saturated MnO-SiO2 slag could be also predicted, and it was in good agreement with the experimental data.
