Reduction of scale defects for surface critical hot and cold rolled steel grades at Tata Steel,Jamshedpur Works
Owing to high temperature, scale formation is inherent to hot rolling process. The overall scale defect has reduced over the years owing to various actions taken in the past, such as improving efficiency of descalers (primary & secondary),modification of leveler (after coil box) and implementation of automatic surface inspection system (SIS).Of late, there is a rising trend of scale defects in few surface critical grades, such as silicon scale in wheel/rim high strength hot rolled grades and ‘tiny scale’ in automotive cold rolled and annealed interstitial free (IF) grades. To resolve silicon scale problem, analysis is done w.r.t to heating schedule of slabs in the reheat furnace and subsequent effect of rolling temperatures during roughing and finishing operations. However,‘sand type tiny scale’ problem in IF grade was, altogether,a new problem! Analysis of tiny scale entails defect mapping on cold strip coupled with extensive sampling and metallography study of defect and finally correlating these findings with hot & cold rolling process parameters which led to take various corrective actions in the production chain. This paper talks about efforts taken by Tata Steel to analyze causes and take corrective action to reduce these defects.
