Hot DRI for Productivity enhancement & Energy conservation

  In its strive for more economical steel production,the Iron & steel Industry has always been looking for ways and means to enhance productivity and energy conservation.The concept of Hot charge for steel making is not new,the BF-BOF steel making route utilizes Liquid Pig Iron in the converter and the EAF operators have been using Preheated scrap for the same purpose.The DRI based steel industry has also been working in this direction and charging of hot DRI,directly to the EAF for steelmaking is catching momentum.Utilization of Hot DRI enables steelmaking at much less cost due to lower Power on time leading to enhanced productivity,lower energy consumption and savings in other consumables.HADEED,the Saudi Iron & Steel Company,is one of the leading DRI based steelmaker.Convinced with the concept of utilizing Hot DRI for steelmaking,HADEED made a decision for the first ever plant to be designed for Hot DRI discharge,transportation in a closed system and utilization in the EAF for steelmaking.All available technologies were examined and a decision was made to install a MIDREX DR megamod (Mod E) with an annual capacity of 1.76 MT DRI with options for hot as well cold DRI utilization for steelmaking.The hot charging option has enabled production of extra tons of steel annually compared to cold DRI option with savings in energy.This paper will highlight the design concept of the new plant and share the initial operating experience along with the estimated and actual benefits of the hot DRI usage.
