The rocky road to success:Implementation of BOF Level 2 with DYNACON model and LOMAS offgas analysis at Tangshan ISCO
A BOF Level 2 automation system with Dynacon model and LOMAS offgas analysis has been implemented at Tangshan ISCO’s No.1 steelmaking and rolling plant (HBIS group) for three 150-ton BOFs.Although Tangshan ISCO was already producing at lowest costs, the management decided to focus on further cost optimization in combination with quality improvements, and in 2006 thus nominated Siemens VAI to be their partner in the BOF Level 2 automation project.Siemens VAI is well experienced in automation for steelmaking and has once again proven its expertise in this project. The implementation of a Level 2 automation system into a BOF plant which has already been in operation for many decades is always a challenging and complex task. The work involved was a good deal more than both parties expected.Starting with the first commissioning,it took three years to improve and stabilize the site and to achieve a satisfying Level 2 performance. This paper reflects the rocky but absolutely essential road to be taken in order to effectually establish an automation system in a BOF plant where site conditions are normally unsuitable for automation.
