The Development of ESP Technology
The Italian steel producer ACCIAIERIA ARVEDI SpA,Cremona,Italy, part of the Finarvedi Group, operates two mini-mills for flat products and the related finishing lines. It produces 3 million tonnes per year of steel coils using patented castrolling technology, called ISP ESP.The Arvedi ISP ESP technology was developed from the original idea to fully exploit the thermal energy of the liquid steel to produce,in an effective and compact line, quality hot rolled thin gauge steel to replace cold rolled products. The idea, patented worldwide as ISP?,was applied at the Acciaieria Arvedi steelworks in Cremona in 1992 as Europe’s first and the world’s second mini-mill for flat rolled steel based on thin slab casting.Implemented through the castrolling concept which, for the first time in the world, connected casting and rolling without interruption, thus allowing a very thin transfer bar to enter the rolling mill,it consequently produced thin gauge quality steel in a very compact line (180 m).The new Arvedi ESP line,a direct evolution from ISP,is the first in the world to apply a completely endless concept.A series of innovations (covered worldwide by 410 Arvedi-owned patents) relative to the Mould System (the shape and materials used in the mould and SEN),the Bow-type Caster and the Induction Heater are the basis for this industrially feasible technology, making it the world’s first plant based on endless Cast-Rolling.Owing to its highly compact lay-out lower specific investment costs are incurred for an ESP line compared with conventional thin slab casting and direct rolling plants.Production costs are also noticeably lower than those of other thin slab plants and also of the ISP plant already operating in Cremona.Productivity on the ESP plant, based on a single casting line,is 2 million tonnes per year for the first phase while a possible increase in mass flow from the caster may take capacity up to 3 million tonnes per year.Total energy and water consumption of the Arvedi ESP process is very low compared with that of a conventional casting and rolling process: depending on the final product, energy consumption is about 60% lower.Owing to endless rolling operations, the production of strip with uniform and repeatable mechanical properties is allowed over the entire strip width and length and with the line’s ability to produce ultrathin hot rolled strip gauges of 0.8 mm a subsequent cold rolling process is no longer necessary for many strip applications. The Arvedi ESP plant is the first example of fully continuous production from liquid steel to hot rolled coil on the downcoiler in 4-5 mins, and the Cremona plant is the reference (master) plant for sales of future ESP lines,The aim of this presentation is to provide data relative to the new plant and production results of the endless casting and rolling line after about 3 years of commercial production.
