Development trends of efficient iron and steelmaking in Germany and Europe

Steel is the material No.1 of a modern industrial society.World crude steel production in 2011 has reached 1.5 billion tonnes, the highest ever level. The growth of steel production will continue. With a global share of 69 %,crude steel production through the blast furnace-BOF converter is dominant. The developments in the markets for raw materials and energy for steel production are determined by increased demand and price increases. Here, the steel production in Germany and Western Europe show a very high degree of resource efficiency.Particularly the German steel industry will be burdened through the energy and climate change pressures significantly. The steel industry is investing in Europe in the development of new methods with lower CO2 emissions. The ways of steel production to the finished component are complex and the application of steel is characterized by a wide range of uses in apparatus and machine construction structures, bridge building, steel power generation and environmental technology, transport and materials handling, and packaging industries. An essential feature of efficiency of the steel is its 100 % material recycling.Innovative steels prevent six times more CO2 emissions in the utilization phase than were emitted in the production of these steel grades.
