Utilization of iron ore slime through Hybrid Pellet Sintering
NMDC has been in the field of iron ore mining since 1958 and presently excavates nearly 28 MT of ROM per annum.During the course of sizing and beneficiation of ROM ore,10% to 12% of iron values are rejected as slimes.So far,about 20 MT of slimes has been accumulated in the tailing dams of various NMDC mines at Bailadila and Donimalai.These projects/mines are in the reserve forest area of Chattisgarh and due to limitation of diversion of forest land for non-forest use,no space is available for constructing additional tailing dams for further dumping of slimes.Slime accumulation may cause environmental pollution,and space constrain at mine site.For further operation of iron ore mining at Bailadila sector,this slime generated during operation has to be managed/utilized in proper way.A number of methods have been tried for utilizing these slimes,however non are providing panacea to the problem.This slime of finer size can be used in sintering through hybrid pellet sintering.The slime of Bailadila deposit-5 was taken for study which was containing 61.3% FeT and D80 was 100 micron.Prim fascia particle size of slime is not suitable for sinter production.However slime were subjected for Hybrid pellet sintering and the results of sintering studies indicates that sinter for blast furnace feed can be produced from Slimes.Micro pellets of close size range 3mm-8mm produced from slimes had provided better suction and uniform firing of sinter bed.The sinter produced had exhibited good physical and metallurgical properties comparable to the conventional sinters.To achieve required green micro pellet strength bentonite is used in combination with hydrated lime as binder.This study attempts to describe the a method for producing sinter from very fine iron ore slime of Bailadila deposit-5 through Hybrid pellet sintering process,The sinter produced were meeting all requisite physical and metallurgical properties of blast furnace feedstock.
