A reviereview on mechanism and kinetics of peritectic phase transition in Fe-C alloy

The peritectic transition behavior has attracted the interests of variety of researchers, since it strongly affects the microstructure evolution during solidification of steel. In this paper, the importance of study on peritectic transition is emphasized and some work carried out on investigation of peritectic transition, viz.,peritectic reaction and peritectic transformation,in Fe-C binary alloy is reviewed. The currently accepted mechanism and kinetics on peritectic reaction and some debates about this theory are described. The peritectic transformation behaviors during holding and cooling are summarized based on the date from either model experiment or in-situ direct observation. In the last part,a new approach on reducing the peritectic transformation rate by addition of second phase particles recently proposed is given,by which a new method for γ grain refinement during solidification is expected.
