Development and Application of Mold Fluxes for Casting High Aluminum TRIP Steels

  Due to its high content in the Al-TRIP steel,Al is easily to react with (SiO2) in the mold slag during the continuous casting process,which results in the increase of basicity and the Al2O3 content,respectively.The magnitude change adversely impacts on the physical properties such as melting,lubricity and heat transfer of the slag,which can affect continuous casting process and the surface quality of slabs.A type of lime-silica based mold fluxes for casing high aluminum TRIP steels with basicity 0.68,melting temperature 1030℃ and viscosity 0.220 Pa·s at 1300℃ was designed according to the CaO-SiO2-Al2O3 ternary phase diagram.Some characteristics were changed to fit for continuous casting process.For instance,the basicity of the liquid slag samples obtained from the mold was changed to 1.0,the content of alumina was increased from 1.3% to 15% and the viscosity at 1300℃ was 0.252 Pa·s.Three trial heats applied the mold fluxes were conducted with the content of aluminum in the steel 0.8%~1.0% and the size of slab 1450mm×250mm at the Second Steel Plant of Wuhan Iron and Steel Co.Ltd..The casting speed was 0.89 m/min,and total length of the cast slab was 99m.The depth of the liquid slag in the mold was 8~10 mm and no slag rims being observed noticeably during the trial casting process.The mold fluxes consumption was 0.43 kg per ton steel.The surface crack index of the slabs was reduced from 0.129 to 0.026,however,the surface depressions on the slab declined inconspicuously by comparison with the previous mold fluxes.The results showed that further studies are necessary to deal with the surface depressions on the slabs with CaO-SiO2 based mold fluxes.
