Effect of heat treatment on the microstructure and mechanical properties of an offshore structural steel E550
Effect of quenching and tempering temperatures on the microstructure and mechanical properties of a high strength offshore structural steel E550 was investigated.It was found that with the increase of quenching temperature,the strength increases,while the elongation and toughness decrease.In contrast,an opposite effect on the mechanical properties was observed with the increase of tempering temperature.The best combination of properties can be obtained by a quenching temperature of 940℃ and tempering temperature of 600℃.Microstructural examination revealed that the laths of martensite and bainite become coarser with the increase of either quenching or tempering temperature.
