Effect of intercritical heat treatment on the microstructure and mechanical properties of an abrasion resistant heavy steel plate NM400

A group of intercritical quenching (Q) tests was carried out on a HB400 grade abrasion resistant heavy steel plate NM400 by heating to different temperatures ranged from 750℃ to 820℃.The result shows that the initial microstructure, before Q’,has a great effect on the final microstructure and mechanical properties. The hardness of samples with two initial microstructures,i.e.martensite and bainite,is almost the same, but the toughness of the former is much higher than that of the latter, after the Q+T (tempering) process. Also, the fracture morphology of the Q+T treated sample starting with a bainite microstructure shows a cleavage surface, while the one with martensite shows a mixture of dimple and cleavage. For the Q (quenching)+Q+T process, with the increase of Q temperature from 750℃ to 820℃,the volume fraction of martensite increases while that of ferrite decreases, the microstructure turns finer, the hardness and toughness increase first and then decrease, attaining their peak values at 800 and 780℃,respectively.
