Effect of Titanium Addition on the Solidification Microstructure of High Pure Ferritic Stainless Steels
Solidification microstructure and inclusions of the ingots, which are the raw material in the process of rolling and heat treatment, have great effects on the properties of final products.Niobium and titanium are used to react with carbon and nitrogen to improve the properties of the high pure ferritic stainless steels. In the research, combined with thermodynamic calculation, effects of titanium addition on solidification microstructure and inclusions formed before and in the process of solidification were investigated by optical microscope, scanning electron microscope and energy disperse spectroscope for three high pure ferritic stainless steels with different titanium additions. Results show that Al2O3 and a few (Nb,Ti)N precipitated when titanium addition was 0.01%.Well-distributed TiN and Al2O3-TiOx-TiN afforded nuclei to solidification process so that the ratios of equiaxed zone increased with the titanium addition. The ratio increased from 42.1% to 64.0% with the titanium addition increased from 0.01% to 0.10% and the ratio increased to 85.7% when the titanium addition is 0.34%.
