Research on Low Carbon Iron-making Technologies Based on Hydrogen Metallurgy

With the development of iron and steel industry, high energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions have become increasing problems in traditional blast furnace process. With the increase requirement for CO2 emission reduction, the development of low-carbon economy and the exploitation of new low-carbon iron-making technologies has become an important prerequisite for the development of iron and steel industry. Now ULCOS of European Union,COURSE 50 of Japan and expelling carbon project of POSCO are all engaged in developing on non-carbon metallurgy iron-making technology.Considering the current resources condition in China, development of low carbon iron-making technology based on hydrogen metallurgy by using coke oven gas and coal gas as reduction agents is an effective approach to implement energy conservation and emission reduction in steel industry. The processes including coke oven gas injection into blast furnace and coke oven gas self-reforming for the production of direct reduction iron are analyzed. The key technical problems such as hydrogen utilization ratio in blast furnace, methane reforming efficiency,BTX cracking and hot DRI production are also investigated. The results show that the production of direct reduction iron using coke oven gas is beneficial for efficient use of the fuel gas resources and easy to realize industrialization. It keeps up with the development of the modern iron-making technology in 21 century.
