Investigation on Characteristics of Wear Debris in Lubricating Oil of Different Wear Periods
An experiment that 5 used lubricating oil samples which gathered according to a certain time-interval analyzed by analytical ferrography was conducted. The characteristics of wear debris extracted from the oil samples were investigated. The physical characteristics including the size, color and shape were observed that the wear debris on ferrograms were examined by SEM to identify the wear micro mechanism and the type of particles. The chemical characteristics of wear debris such as the elements and contents were investigated by EDS.The results show that the main debris in running-in wear are metal particles generated by some wear types like cutting, sliding, fatigue and adhesion wear as well as some impurities mainly contains sand and mineral dust; Wear particles in normal wear period usually are tiny and slender for the were type are mild sliding and fatigue; Debris in abnormal wear are friction polymers, exogenous impurities and metal particles and the wear types are fatigue, cutting, erosive, sliding and adhesion. The tendency of wear debris size during lubricating oil life is that the size of wear debris is small in the early time of running-in wear period then gets bigger till reach a certain maximum while the particle in normal wear is homogeneous and tiny until the coming of abnormal wear in which the debris becomes bulky and non-homogeneous.In addition, the tendency of debris content has some similarities with the size.
