Effect of Cr and Its Adding Method on Microstructure and Properties of WC-9wt%Ni Cemented Carbides

  The aim of this work was to evaluate the effect of Cr and its adding mode on microstructure mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of a series of WC-9wt%Ni cemented carbides.The WC-9wt%Ni alloys were prepared by ball milling method and low pressure sintering.The microstructure and properties of the alloys were then investigated using scanning electron microscope,mechanical property tester and immersion corrosion tests.It has been demonstrated that Cr additions can refine the WC grains,decrease the strength of WC-9wt%Ni cemented carbides,and increase the hardness and immersion corrosion resistant (in tap water) properties of the base alloys.Furthermore,the adding method of Cr shows a significant influence on the WC-9wt%Ni-2.3wt%Cr alloys microstructure and properties.Alloys with Cr added in the form of chromium carbide (Cr3C2) characterized by carburizing and shows a relative high strength and lower hardness.While the addition of pure Cr resulted in the formation of (W,Cr)C solid solution phases in WC-9wt%Ni-2.3wt%Cr cemented carbide and enable the alloys exhibit a higher immersion corrosion resistance in tap water.
