Ultrafine Cemented Carbides Prepared by In-situ Synthesized Composite Powder

  A complete route has been recently developed to prepare the ultrafine cemented carbides,which integrates insitu synthesis of WC-Co composite powder and sinter-HIP.The route has distinctly important potential to scale up and wide industrial applications.By the in-situ reduction and carbonization reactions of pretreated nanoscale metal oxides and carbon black,the WC-10wt%Co composite powder with uitrafine particle sizes was synthesized.The composite powder was densified by the sinter-HlP technique.The cemented carbides bulk has ultrafine microstructure and excellent combined mechanical properties,with the Vickers hardness of HV30 1580 kg/mm2,fracture toughness of 14.50 MPa·m1/2 and transverse rapture strength of 4 720 MPa.The mechanisms for the enhancement of the properties are proposed based on the binder phase characteristics and WC/Co orientation relationship.The prepared cemented carbides were manufactured to cutting tools,which exhibited outstanding properties as compared with the related commercial products and promising applications.
