Synthesis of Nanocrystalline (Ti,Mo)C Solid Solution Powders via a Mechanically Induced Self-sustaining Reaction

Nanocrystalline (Ti,Mo)C solid solution powders were obtained by high-energy ball milling of elemental titanium, molybdenum and carbon (graphite) powders under a argon atmosphere.X-ray diffraction analysis showed that (Ti,Mo)C solid solution formed abruptly via mechanically induced self-sustaining reaction (MSR) after 3 h ball milling.Scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy observation showed that nanocrystalline (Ti,Mo)C solid solution powders with an average grain size of about 30 nm were obtained after 8 h ball milling. The stoichiometry ratio (Ti/Mo molar ratio) in solid solution powders was controlled by metal-to-metal molar ratio and metal-to-carbon molar ratio in the starting powder mixture. The ignition of the MSR was suggested to be mainly controlled by the diffusion of C atoms.
