Evaluation of the Specific Area Measurement of Ultrafine Tungsten Carbide Powders Using BET Isotherms

When analyzing submicron and ultrafine Tungsten Carbide powders for cemented carbide use,a major issue is defining and measuring particle size and characteristics. As the commercial use of submicron and ultrafine WC powders grows, the use of the powder specific surface area,as determined by the Brunauer,Emmett and Teller (BET) gas adsorption technique, has become the most important single descriptor of powder size. This study was undertaken to assess the performance of this measurement technique. In this interlaboratory study, the BET surface area measurement,as practiced today, showed a standard deviation of 0.23 m2/g when measuring WC powders with specific surface areas of ~ 3.8 m2/g.
